Alumnus Highlight

Elias Shams (MS ’96) is part engineer, part entrepreneur. He understands the information tools that people want, and he thrives on being able to deliver them in new and interesting ways.

After receiving his master of science in electrical engineering from GW, Elias gained experience in the telecommunications field by working for various local telecommunications companies, including Yurie Systems and NewBridge Networks. He soon decided, however, to try his own hand at operating a company. In 1999, Elias launched his first internet/telecom company, Telezoo.com. After raising $5 million in venture capital funding, he lead the company to a top five B2B (business-to-business) position worldwide for two consecutive years, next to Cisco.com.

Having successfully started Telezoo, Elias decided to head another DC-based company in August 2006. The company, which is called Searchles.com, was founded by a Johns Hopkins University graduate, Chris Seline. Searchles.com is a site that combines the best and most useful elements of social networking, social search, and social bookmarking sites into one web destination.

“Searchles is a robust, built-in, integrated social search engine that enables you to find and connect to others based on their interests by reviewing their postings, tag clouds, group memberships, etc.,” says Elias. “Searchles users are not merely listing out their interests in their profile; they are actively showing you their interests by posting the relevant content on our site. Searchles’ primary objective is to continually develop the user-generated features that not only increase the relevancy of search results but also strengthen the interactive capabilities of our community of users and common interest groups.” To view a video that introduces Searchles, please visit: www.searchles.com/register.

In addition to his business interests, Elias Shams is active with the SEAS community. He is a member and regular participant of the SEAS National Advisory Council, as well as a regular attendee at CET2C (Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer and Commercialization) events.
